New artist to look out for: Yelawolf

chillaxIn Hip-Hop, success is short lived, a relentless genre where you can suddenly become “hot” or “not”.  Every once in a while a new sound infiltrates the system and defines a new form of “hot”.  Past trends of new sounds have been from Tribe, to Wu-tang, to Biggie, to Jay, to Em, to Mos Def and Talib, to 50, to The Clipse, To Wayne, to Drake.  An evolving escalator of artists representing trends that not only influences the genre, but popular culture as well.  Yelawolf could be the next dude to step on this escalator.  He’s from that dirty region south of the mason dixon, and spits hot fiyaa.  It sounds corny, but his lyrical style can kinda be described as a southern Eminem.  His flow is a mixture of a new type or approach to swagger and the typical southern mentality.  Dude is ill, and spits fast raps without taking any dopeness out of each line by how quick he goes in at all.  Yelawolf’s distinct style if it caught on could be a new step in Hip-hop.  30 years ago who would’ve thought that in the future white dudes from the south would be nice on the mic like this haha.  If you haven’t heard of this skrilla I suggest checkin out the cut I posted to the right in the “crisp new cuts” section.  Enjoy the music and be ready to hear this dude’s name a lot more in the future…o yeah, he was just featured in a juelz video…makin moves:

New Dope Music: Vinnie Paz ~ “Street Wars” feat. The Clipse

This shit is so sick.  Vinnie Paz from Jedi Mind Tricks links up with the Thorton brothers for the single off his upcoming solo LP: The Assassin’s Creed. I would of never expected this collaboration, Jedi Mind Tricks and The Clipse are on opposite sides of the genre, but have come together to push some dope product to the masses.  This track is a testament to both the underground and mainstream of hip-hop.  New Clipse Album came out today, every song is immaculate, go support those dudes.  I’ll keep ya’ll posted on Vinnie’s new project, hit the link below to hear the track, props to 2bz.

GhOsT | December 7, 2009 | 5:09 pm
adulttopWow…my favorite underground producer has reached into the mainstream of the trap and pulled out this Young Jeezy gem.  That’s right people, El-p and Jeezy, this shit is ridiculous, off a new compilation being put together by adult swim.  If you like mainstream dirty south music: you’ll like this shit.  If you like underground indie hip-hop, you’ll like this shit.  If you’re a fan of experimental music: you’ll like this shit.  Click the link below to experience this unlikely fusion.

Musical Chemistry
GhOsT | November 16, 2009 | 10:18 am

CutChemistAlbumCover-783726There are many forms of hip-hop, whether variations in forms of lyrical delivery or styles of instruments used.  In terms of musical production, there are a lot of DJs and producers who move away from the typical hip-hop DJ formula.  These are artists that take their music to the next level by making it an artistic product on it’s own without the lyrics of a rapper.  There dudes are like the hip-hop version of techno music, and many sort this type of sound into a unique genre called Trip Hop. The most famous artists that are a part of this movement are dudes like RJD2, Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, and Blockhead.  Cut Chemist was one of the 2 DJs part of the legendary group Jurassic 5.  Cut makes amazing music, his name serves him well; scientifically blending so many sounds together to produce incredible product different from any type of sound you hear on the radio.  Cut Chemist came out with his most critically acclaimed LP: The Audience’s Listening, a couple years ago.  This project is masterful; the creativity and meaning within each track proves his skills on the turntables, and he produces sounds that I have never heard before.  If you haven’t heard of the chemist and like the track below, I definitely suggest checking out this CD.  Hip-Hop needs more musical experimentation like this in the mainstream; as the beats get simpler the lyrics seem to dumb down, causing the negative phenomenon of ring-tone rap that we can see today to thrive.

Cut Chemist ~ “Spoon”

Deltron 3030: A Blast From Saturn’s Past
GhOsT | November 9, 2009 | 5:55 pm
Deltron 3030 Ghost FactionAs creative as hip-hop is in the present era of the genre, it seems to not stride away from reality into the supernatural.  Deltron 3030 was an underground group that went where nobody had gone before in rap as well as in music in general.  The group consists of the two producers Kid Koala and Dan The Automator, and the more known lyricist named Del Tha Funkee Homosapien.  This concept project is based in the year 3030 where Del takes a rebel approach to a fantasy futuristic world where corporations control the universe.  Pretty crazy right; but musically it goes where no other projects have gone in hip-hop.  The lyrics are multi-layered with stories and hidden meanings, and the production has an ill futuristic dark edge to it.  This was one of the first underground hip-hop albums I really loved, and if you’re lookin for something different to play on your iPod I definitely suggest checking this one out.  Here’s one of my favorite tracks on the project, and I did hear a rumor that they’re working on the long awaited sequel to this epic CD.

The Twisted Brain: The Insane Genius Named Cage
GhOsT | November 5, 2009 | 4:19 pm
cage_depart_from_me_ghost factionIn a world where hip-hop is slowly shifting into a number of different newly forming genres of music, not many artists are effectively moving into the rock-rap genre.  Lil’ Wayne’s rock music is definitely not his strong-suit, Run-DMC did their thing back in the day, but it was more of a marketing move then anything else.  An underground rapper named Cage has made an LP that is an effective synthesis of the two genres.  As I’ve talked about in the past, Cage has had a crazy life, from his own father holding a shotgun to his head, to being a test subject for LSD and anti-depressents in an insane asylum, cage has been through the darkest of times. This comes out in his music, and he paints pictures with his lyrics of the most depressing and disgusting situations using his unique humor and intelligence.  Cage’s last CD: Depart From Me , is an amazing project, and if you’re a fan of underground rap, and trying to find a new sound to get into you should definitely check this out.  Below you can see that I posted one of my favorite songs from the project, where he describes the situation of the fake love that so many young partiers experience in their drunken and drug induced lives.  Amazing stuff; make sure to check this man out if you have never heard of him, and click the link below to hear this track.

C-Rayz Walz
GhOsT | October 29, 2009 | 8:19 am

C-Rayz-Walz Ghost Faction

Cruisin through my iTunes library I came across the beast himself: C-Rayz Walz.  Who is C-Rayz you ask? Many remember him as that MTV made coach who helped a kid who called himself “The Blizzard” become more blizzardly.  Underground hip-hop heads know him as the lyrically versatile and creative artist who has put out a lot of quality material.  C-Rayz was a part of the Definitive Jux Army a couple years back, nowadays I haven’t really seen or heard anything about this dude.  His LP’s are laced with sick experimental production, and he blesses every track with a one-of-a-kind delivery.  If you haven’t heard of this dude I suggest checkin out one of his most critically acclaimed projects called Year of the Beast. Here’s one of his illest tracks produced by the masterful EL-P himself.  If you haven’t seen the MTV Made episode with C-Rayz, you should definitely try to find it online, shit’s pretty hilarious.

Felt 3: A Tribute To Rosie Perez
GhOsT | October 28, 2009 | 8:17 am
20091005-FELT3If you don’t already know, Felt is made up of two rappers: Murs from living legends, and Slug from Atmosphere.  The crazy thing about their new project is that it’s produced by Aesop Rock.  I’m really looking forward to this project.  Slug’s sick, Murs is ill, Aesop is dope, but all three together??!!?…damn.  This LP’s gonna be amazing, and if you haven’t heard of Felt before you should definitely check out their previous projects.  In an era where mainstream rap isn’t real rap, and a lot of old school underground rap is behind the times, this project is the solution to our modern day problem.  Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez drops on November 17th.  Check out one of their new tracks below, you can tell that Aesop’s the producer just by the crazy feel of the record.
